Beyond SEO: Why Generative Engine Optimization Is the New Marketing Frontier
25/08/2026
As AI-generated answers replace a growing share of search results, ranking on a results page isn't enough anymore. Brands now need to be cited and recalled inside the answer itself.
For twenty years, "ranking well" meant one thing: showing up near the top of a page of blue links. That definition is breaking down. AI-powered answer engines — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and similar tools — now generate a direct answer before a user ever sees a traditional search result, and a meaningful share of searches end right there, with no click to any website at all.
That's the gap Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is built to close. Where classic SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list, GEO optimizes content to be understood, trusted, and cited by an AI model when it's synthesizing an answer. It's a different discipline: clear, well-structured, factually precise content that an AI system can accurately summarize and attribute, rather than content built primarily to satisfy a ranking algorithm.
What actually changes in practice
- Structure over keyword density. Clear headings, direct answers to specific questions, and well-organized facts matter more than working in every possible search phrase.
- Being citable, not just visible. If an AI engine is going to summarize your content, it needs to be able to extract a clean, accurate claim from it — vague marketing copy doesn't quote well.
- Brand mentions beyond your own site. AI answer engines draw on the wider web, so being referenced accurately on third-party sites, reviews, and directories increasingly feeds into whether a brand gets surfaced at all.
We're not telling clients to abandon traditional SEO — it still drives real traffic, and it isn't going anywhere. But we are building GEO into content strategy as its own workstream: auditing how a brand currently shows up (or doesn't) in AI-generated answers, and restructuring key content so it's positioned to be cited rather than skipped over. It's the same underlying goal SEO has always had — being found by the right people at the right moment — adapted to how people are actually searching now.
